Sunny Carolinas

Our friend Barb came to visit us in Myrtle Beach and we actually had sunshine!

We visited beautiful Huntington Beach State Park and Brookgreen - a former rice plantation turned sculpture garden.

Wilmington, North Carolina was a big surprise. Amazing old homes, downtown riverwalk, brew pubs, restaurants and......

goodie shops that were OPEN!

Wilmington was a nice change of pace from "the redneck riviera" (aka Myrtle Beach :-)

Carolinas = Rain

Beaufort, North Carolina was once home to Blackbeard and the site of the wreck of his flagship the Queen Anne's Revenge. Most artifacts from the wreck are still being brought up and prepared for display (the cannons were all fully loaded, very pirate-like). We enjoyed the small museum dedicated to the Queen Anne's and sea-going in general.

Being ahead of the season meant closed bakeries....

and rhum bars - missed it by 5 days!

There are lots of old, old homes in Beaufort but the cold, wet weather left a gloomy impression.

One good thing about rain though....it's not snow :-)

Apologies to Georgia

With just 4 days there wasn't enough time to do justice to the Georgia coast. We visited Brunswick & the Golden Isles and Savannah.

Stuff is OLD along this stretch - this cobblestone street near the Savannah River is made from old ship's ballast stones.

Savannah was built in the 1700's around 24 park-like squares. 22 are still in existence - like shady green islands.

This bench supposedly marks the spot where Savannha's founder first spent the night when he came ashore in 1736.

Reed & I were amazed that these cannons, a gift from George Washington to the city of Savannah, are just sitting out in the open. They still fire them on occasion too!

Block after block of gorgeous old mansions and elegant homes of every shape & size kept us so occupied that there were lots of sights we missed....the tavern where Cap'n Flint gives Billy Bones the treasure map in Treasure Island...Paula Dean's buffet....the Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil tour.......probably need another visit.

This is Georgia?
